In 1968, the United States passed the Flag Protection Act which stated that it was illegal to mutilate, deface, physically defile, burn a flag, or even keep it on the ground. However, in 1990, The Supreme Court struck down FPA with their decision in United States V. Eichman, which stated the First Amendment supersedes the protections of the US Flag.
