Billy Joel released An Innocent Man, his ninth record, in 1983. Joel had already been a massively successful singer songwriter for a decade by that point. Despite his fame, he was not happy to simply rest on his laurels. An Innocent Man was a throwback to American sounds of yesteryear, trying his hand at doo-wop and soul songs with songs like "Uptown Girl" and "The Longest Time." It was another hit, going to #4 in the US and going seven-times Platinum.
